Child Beauty Pageants: Choice or Chattel?

The words "child beauty pageant" sound to me like the words "you're on a vegetarian diet" would sound to Hannibal Lecter.

There have been a few documentaries about these pageants and they are disturbing. I'm not talking about the so-called "natural" pageants where the children wear 'minimal makeup' and have natural hair, although I'm not a fan of those either. I'm talking about the popular ones, the ones that most of the kids are entered into. I'm talking about the 'real' beauty pageants for children that have mothers north and south, vying for their future Miss America to win Miss Grande Belle or Miss Queen of Elegance or [insert any old Trite Title Here]. Not only do the toddlers wear more makeup than Tammy Faye (bless) but they have a swimsuit competition in the pageant. 4 year old girls in bikinis! And then you see the judges - middle aged to older women and men. I have questions - What exactly are these older men judging? How they fill out their bikini? Who offered them the job? And why did they take said job?

I wore bikinis when I was four and younger. I don't get what the big deal is about that.

Here we go again...These are children you are talking about...So what if they are wearing bathings suits?...........
Judges are judging them on their poise, confidence, can people be so cruel on this subject.....Instead of worrying about the mothers and kids....start worrying about your life....

These girls are not provocative....They are modeling...
MODELING......and some do a very good job...Giving children confidence in themselves.....Making them leaders......Look at some of the famous designers...Their fashion shows are no different....

So what if a 4 year old learns to model...Thats great....Maybe she will be Hannah Montanna one day...
or maybe she will get a Cover Girl contract....What is wrong with that....

Give the people in pageants a break...
They are moms and dads who like being involved with their girls....Sharing time with their children....and maybe the people who keep giving negative thoughts are the ones who didn't have time for their children at all....

Maybe instead of putting pageants down....Why don't you really voice your opinion on why your life is so unhappy....

I am amazed that there aren't more comments made about this show! More people are "disgusted" with the Duggar family over far less! I have a 2 year old grand daughter and if my daughter tried to put her in one of these pagents I'd come unglued! This is nothing but a pedophile's dream!!! C'mon people...get real!

I wore bikinis as a kid, too. For swimming - going to the beach. However, I was not paraded onstage in front of an audience after having been taught to wiggle, gyrate and make eyes at a panel of judges. There was no fake hair, teeth, and other trappings of age-inappropriate glitz. Bikinis are not the issue. "Modeling" in and of itself is not the issue.

It is unclear to me, how a person can develop true poise and confidence when you have to be the 'best fake' on the stage. There is a wide range of what is considered 'modeling' - some innocent, some not. A five year old onstage trying to be like Marilyn Monroe... The sexualizing of children is not cute.

And *I* mind, because now it has moved from a private venue and into the living rooms of anyone - every tom, dick and pervert to see.

This is what one person said in defense of beauty pageants:

Judges are judging them on their poise, confidence, can people be so cruel on this subject

uhh, in your defense you brought out one of the biggest reasons as to why beauty pageantry is a horrid practice. The judges are JUDGING THEM. and thats outright bullshit to say that they are judging them on "poise, confidence and outfit." They are judging them on superficial standards such as Beauty and wealth. That's why young girls are forced to get hair extensions, fake teeth, and to put on gallons of makeup.

and you said that the judges judge them on outfit? parents spend tons of money on those outfits.

the truth is the truth and the people who do pageants are either ignorant to what they are really doing or in denial.

there are other ways to teach a child about confidence without debasing them to superficial puppets. There are other ways to teach them, without having to sacrifice the thigns kids have to sacrifice to do these pageants.

In beauty pageants kids are already taught that they have to be up to a standard or else they will never win. People can deny it all they want but in the end, these children have to give up self respect. they can teach themselves respect for who they truly are beneath make up.

Those little girls are being taught that the most important thing is how they look. Judging somebody based on how much makeup they have on is just wrong. It is not about bikinis, lots of normal little girls wear bikinis. Preschool girls are being sexualized and some people think that is okay. It is clearly not.

I usually do not leave a ton of responses,
but i did some searching and wound up here "Child Beauty Pageants: Choice or Chattel?".
And I do have a couple of questions for you if you do not mind.
Is it only me or does it seem like a few of the responses appear like they are written by brain dead visitors?

:-P And, if you are writing on additional social sites, I would like to keep up with everything fresh you have to
post. Could you make a list of all of your public pages like your Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin
